AbstractStandard segmentation algorithms normally do not produce adequate results for SAR image, because of its non-gaussian statistical properties. In this paper is discussed a proposal and the first results of a multi-level incremental segmenter for SAR imagey with several original enhancements: 1) It is designed to be flexible, that can be used adequately for optical and SAR imagery. 2) It is multi-level in the sense that it begin with a crude segmentation of the scene, based on a smaller resolution version of the target scene and in an incremental resolution version, it goes to a higher resolution, refining the segmentation. 3) The segmentation refinament can be constrained to higher interest section of the scene. This method permit get as quick as possible a version of a scene segmentation, task that normally would take a long time. Parameters testing phase, which is very commom in this type of algorithms, can be conduted also in a efficient way since one can get quick results. The first result of such algorithms is presented and compared with as segmentation produced by SPRING segmentator for three scenes for SIR-C imagery from the Manaus area.
